Rising rents and horrendous prices for residential property make permanent living on a yacht a desirable alternative for some. And following the amendment to the Registration Act, it is also permissible to register the boat as a residence. But not all harbours play along.
YACHT asked marina operators throughout Germany whether they allow permanent living on board, and their answers reveal a complex picture - the regulations vary greatly, ranging from a warm welcome to strict prohibition, with every conceivable nuance. After all, what is legally feasible is not always desirable.
Some administrations, for example, prohibit permanent living for fear that residents of places of tourist interest will move to the ship and "rent or sell their residential property ... rent or sell their property for a profit". This is the argument of the municipal operator of the harbour on Föhr, for example. Others want "no housing estates" on their jetties. Still other marinas would have nothing against it, but do not have the infrastructure to enable year-round operation.
In YACHT 19/2017, we reveal what interested parties need to look out for when searching for accommodation in the harbour and what restrictions there are in selected marinas. The magazine is now available from newsagents, in the DK-Shop or directly order digitally here!
